Hello from Janis!

Looking back at July, our San Francisco real estate market was very strong considering the economy and the financial environment. Though number of sales for July was off from a year ago, it was higher than June. As we move into August we will see if this trend continues. Some of the spurt can be attributed to first time buyer tax credits, but probably buyers finally realize that the prices are great.

August tends to be a very slow month in San Francisco, usually due to the gloomy weather and because many people are still on vacation. However, I am still quite busy and sales activity is strong--and the weather has been very gloomy and cold. The news is beginning to be more positive, and people are apparently gaining more confidence in the economy and their own ability to earn a living. I just wish the lenders would be more helpful in this process. There are more "government rules" coming out about "truth in lending" which will slow the process of getting a loan even more. Talk about over-kill. Between the appraisal difficulties and now the extra time involved in the loan process, it will put even more uncertainty in the whole buying process. Expect to see more transactions failing at the last minute and more properties coming back on the market due to lender problems. But if you are persistent and patient the rewards can be a great property at a fabulous price.

Interest Rates

See what Foster Weeks says every Monday about interest rates in his weekly newsletter and on Blog. With all the turmoil in the stock and bond markets, it changes day to day! However, interest rates have been very low for a long time. Now might be the time to take advantage of it!
